Cervical Total Disc Replacement
Cervical total disc replacement, also known as total disc arthroplasty, is a surgical treatment of symptomatic cervical disc disease. The cervical discs are cushions located between the cervical vertebrae. If a disc becomes damaged or moves out of place, it can cause pressure on the spinal nerves or spinal cord, causing pain, numbness or weakness.
Symptoms of cervical disc degeneration may include:
- Neck pain
- Neck stiffness
- Headaches
- Pain that extends into the shoulders or arms
- Weakness of the shoulders, arms, hands or legs
- Burning, tingling or numbness in the arms or hands
As we age, our cervical discs degenerate, but some people will experience more symptoms than others. If you suffer from chronic pain and your condition does not responded to non-invasive treatments, you may be a candidate for cervical total disc replacement. During the procedure, the damaged or diseased cervical disc is removed and replaced with an artificial disc. Compared to conventional anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), in which the cervical vertebrae are fused together once the damaged cervical disc is removed, cervical total disc replacement removes the source of pain while also maintaining the motion between the vertebrae.
Minimally invasive surgery, also known as laparoscopic surgery, has been used to treat many kinds of back and spine conditions. Using a small telescope, surgeons are able to insert a long surgical instrument into a small incision to perform surgery. Minimally invasive surgery patients enjoy faster recovery and shorter hospitalization than with traditional open surgery. Many back and spine surgeries can also be performed as robot-assisted, minimally invasive surgeries. The surgeons at Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery, perform a wide variety of routine and complex surgical procedures using the da Vinci® Surgical System.
